College Appoints Senior Assessors

The College of Optometrists is pleased to announce the appointment of seven Senior Assessors to help ensure standardisation in Work-based Assessment across the Scheme for Registration (SfR). Senior Assessors have been appointed in seven regions as follows:

Scotland                    Ewan MacMillan
North West               Sarah Dawson
North East                Harold Atkinson
Midlands                   John Corby
London North           Nick Silverburg
London South          Colin Davidson
South West               Angela Whitaker

There are currently 83 College-appointed SfR Assessors who formally assess pre-registration trainees on an ongoing basis. Senior Assessors will provide support and development opportunities for all those Assessors working in their region. The work of the Senior Assessors will include running quarterly Peer Review Groups that will provide a forum for Assessors to share and debate best practice with their peer group.

Commenting on the appointments, College Chief Executive Bryony Pawinska said “The Scheme for Registration is now in its second full year of operation and the appointment of these Senior Assessors will help assure its quality and consistency. This appointment will also give Assessors across the country a more formal way to share their examples of assessment in practice and gain support from their peers.”

The Senior Assessors commence their new roles on 23 April 2007.
