College & GOC team up to talk to optometry students

21 September 2007

The College of Optometrists and the General Optical Council have once again teamed up to deliver a series of presentations to first year students at each university offering a degree course in optometry.

The student road shows are designed to offer new optometry students an insight into the profession, to highlight the role of the GOC and requirements for registration and to raise awareness of the College and the variety of benefits available to its Student Associate Members. The GOC is also visiting institutions offering dispensing optics courses.

The road shows, which started this week, build on the success of a similar series of presentations delivered to students over the past two years and give new students the opportunity to meet with representatives from the GOC and the College, including staff and practising optometrists from a variety of backgrounds, and learn more about both organisations in an informal setting.

The College will also provide students with a Fresher Pack, containing useful items, donated by the industry, such as PD rules, pen torches, Wratton 12’s and iris diameter measures. Students in each year will also receive a new look copy of College’s student newsletter Foresight, with features including an interview with a newly qualified optometrist, an update on preparing for the Scheme for Registration, a look at the work the College has undertaken to raise the profile of the profession and details of the College/Elsevier Science book offer, enabling students to purchase titles at a 15% discount.
