Professor David Thomson BSc(Hons) PhD MCOptom

David graduated with a degree in Optometry from City University in 1980. Following a pre-registration year in Portsmouth he studied for a PhD in Visual Psychophysics. Upon completion of his PhD in 1985 he undertook a 3 year post-doctoral Welcome Trust research project to investigate pupillary function in patients with geniculo-striate lesions.  He then joined the academic staff at City University where he was granted a Chair in 2003 and served as Head of Department between 2005 and 2008. David’s principal research interests are the development of software for vision assessment and screening.  His software has won a number of awards and is very widely used in Optometry and Ophthalmology in the UK and overseas.  David is the current chairman of the British University Committee of Optometry and serves on a number of committees for the College and the Association of Optometrists.
