Dr Uduak Udom, Governing Board member of the World Council of Optometry and President of the African Council of Optometry has been awarded a fellowship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Dr Udom is from Nigeria and it is believed that she is the first optometrist ever to be awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship in the 50 years of the Fellowship Programme.
Commonwealth Professional Fellowships are for mid-career professionals from developing Commonwealth countries to spend a short period (in this case under three months) with a relevant UK host organisation in their field (in this case the World Council of Optometry) for a programme of professional development. For more information on the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship Scheme see www.cscuk.org.uk.
The College of Optometrists has offered to provide Dr Udom with office accommodation during her fellowship and the WCO secretariat is co-ordinating the arrangements for her fellowship programme, which is to take place from end September – 10 December 2010.
