  1. College to re-structure to ensure best possible service for the public and the profession

    The College of Optometrists is to re-structure to ensure greater regional representation and stronger links to its membership. Following an extensive review process, the Council of the College, at its meeting on 6 November 2002, approved the report from management consultants, Headlam Associates, which details the future strategic direction for the College.

    The College of Optometrists announces an exciting addition to an already impressive line up of workshops and lectures for Conference 2002 in Liverpool on the 17 and 18 November 2002.

  3. College co-hosts fringe events at party conferences to promote value of optometric services

    2 October 2002

    The College is taking an active role at the three main party conferences in order to promote the value of optometric services, and ensure the skills of optometrists are recognised and rewarded. The College held a joint fringe meeting at the Labour Party and Liberal Democrat Party conferences, in conjunction with the RNIB, and will be holding a fringe meeting at the Conservative party conference in Bournemouth next week.

  4. CET self-certifying

    Forms are being sent out in early October to practitioners asking for details of the CET they have completed during 2002.

  5. Supervisor Courses - Places Still Available

    Places are still available on training days to be held during May for people who intend to become a supervisor or who are thinking of doing so or for those who have supervised in the past and would like a refresher course.

  6. Professor Stephen Parrish re-appointed as College Examinations Adviser

    The College is pleased to announce that Professor Stephen Parrish has been re-appointed as the College's Examinations Adviser. The role of the Examinations Adviser is to advise Council and, in particular, the College's Academic Committee and Secretariat on all aspects of the conduct of pre-registration training and the full range of the College's examinations including the PQE Parts 1 & 2, Higher Qualifications and Delegated Functions.

  7. College offers discounted private health insurance to Members

    The College is pleased to announce that it has been able to negotiate, on behalf of its members, economical, comprehensive medical health insurance cover on preferential terms with Western Provident Association (WPA).

  8. Trial of PQE Pt II examination

    27 August 2002

    In May this year, following extensive development, the College held a trial of the proposed new Professional Qualifying Examination, PQE, part II. The new examination incorporates Multiple Choice Questions/Visual Recognition, Interpretation of Clinical Signs, practical station examinations and case scenarios. These changes are designed to achieve greater objectivity to the examination.

  9. DOCET Offers New Distance Learning Courses

    This year, for the first time, DOCET tendered for a distance-learning course with the content to complement that offered in the tendered courses of Cataract and Learning Disabilities. Following a tendering process, the joint bid from Optician magazine and Net lectures was successful.

  10. College Disappointed by Unaltered DOCET Funding

    2 August 2002

    The College of Optometrists has written to the Secretary of State for Health, Alan Milburn MP, to express disappointment that the money allocated for the profession's continuing professional development scheme (DOCET) has not been increased. A meeting to discuss the matter has been requested.
