    The current College ruling regarding ratio of trainees to supervisors states that supervisors may only employ a second trainee if the existing trainee has successfully completed the Work-based Assessment and has sat the Final Assessment of the Scheme for Registration and been unsuccessful in one or more sections.

    The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) is the world authority on the science, technology and standardisation of light, lighting and vision. The National Illumination Committee of Great Britain (CIE-UK) is the member body of CIE for the United Kingdom. The College is represented on CIE-UK by Dr Alan Smith, who has produced a short report on some of the items raised within CIE-UKthat impact on the optometrist and/or their practice.

    Representatives from the industry gathered together at the College of Optometrists on the 11 September 2006 for the annual Stakeholder Consultation meeting, to discuss the agenda for future meetings of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Eye Health and Visual Impairment.   7. College Council Nominations Draw Record Response

    College Council nominations closed this week resulting in a requirement for ballots in five regions – London, North West, Scotland, South East and South West. Following these elections, there will be a full complement of 35 regionally elected Council Members.

  8. College Backs Independent Prescribing for Optometrists

    The College has responded to the consultation on proposals to introduce Independent Prescribing by Optometrists by supporting “Option 3”, within which optometrists would prescribe for any ocular condition from a limited formulary.

  9. Optometry Tomorrow 2007 Conference Programme Announced

    The College of Optometrists’ annual conference, Optometry Tomorrow 2007 will be held on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 March in Newcastle upon Tyne. Following the success of this year’s event in Bristol, the College has put together a strong lecture and workshop programme, specially designed to address the issues affecting optometrists in day-to-day practice
