Patient Case Studies

Your case studies - raising awareness and promoting the role of the optometrist.

Patient case studies are a great way to bring news stories to life – and to show the importance of regular eye examinations in detecting and treating a range of eye diseases and other conditions.

We’re building a collection of case studies that can be used to highlight the role of the optometrist and encourage all members of the public, especially those who are at greater risk of serious conditions such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy and the more disadvantaged in our communities, to make an appointment with their local member.

Your opportunity to get involved – tell us your stories
We’re asking our members for case studies that we can provide to journalists and use in our College materials, including on our award-winning public-facing website

They will also help you to share your achievements and raise the profile of your practice within your community - and beyond.

These are the kind of stories we are looking for:

  • Someone who was diagnosed with an eye condition (e.g. glaucoma) in the early stages and as a result was able to have the condition treated before permanent damage was caused
  • Someone who was diagnosed with an eye condition (such as dry eye) and given treatment which quickly eased their symptoms
  • Someone who went for a regular sight test appointment and a possible wider health condition was picked up by the optometrist

To help you write your story, we’ve developed an easy-to-use case study template, Case study template and patient consent form , that will help you capture the most important information about your patient, their condition and how you were able to help, so that we can turn it into an engaging and inspiring case study.

Here’s an example of a case study where an optometrist was able to save a patient’s vision and one showing how an optometrist helped a child to settle in school  to show how your finished case study will look.

Please make sure you answer all the questions, and gain the written consent of your patient (we cannot use the story without their signature). Once we have written up your case study, we’ll make sure that both you and your patient are happy with it before we do anything with it.
