Additional Supply

What is involved

Purpose

The purpose of the assessment is to ensure that you have the knowledge and skills to enter the specialist register in Additional Supply. Within the context of Additional Supply, you will be required to demonstrate against the following learning outcomes that you:

a. Are competent in the assessment, diagnosis and management of common ophthalmic conditions.

b. Have an ability to recognise sight-threatening conditions that should be referred.

c. Have an ability to consult effectively with patients.

d. Have an ability to monitor the response to treatment and modify the management accordingly.

e. Have an awareness of your own limitations and the ability to make clinical decisions based on the needs of the patient.

f. Have an ability to critically analyse and evaluate your ongoing performance in relation to prescribing practice.

Format

The assessment will consist of a 30-minute structured oral based on the portfolio of clinical experience that you submitted. Examiners will discuss the cases you have presented and may also ask you about the management of other conditions relevant to additional supply.

How to approach the Assessment

Remember that the examiners are looking for evidence of your ability to supply medicines safely. Make sure that you can discuss the decisions you made, and the reasons for them, in relation to the cases you have submitted as well as what you might have done if circumstances had been different. Make sure, too, that you can discuss other conditions using the knowledge you have gained on the theory course and cases that you have seen during your placement.

Remember you only have 30 minutes so keep your answers clear and relevant. Use examples to demonstrate your competence.

Marking Scheme

The Examiners will already have scored your submitted portfolio against the learning outcomes set out above where appropriate. They will score your performance in the structured oral against the learning outcomes. You will be required to demonstrate competence against all the learning outcomes to pass overall.

There are no grades. You will either pass or fail overall.
