  Guidance on the referral of Glaucoma suspects by community optometrists 

This guidance relates to asymptomatic patients. Those with symptoms should be treated according to current protocols.

This guidance relates to suspected glaucoma only.


   Joint Supplementary College Guidance on Supervision in relation to Glaucoma-related Care by Optometrists

In April 2009 NICE issued guidelines on the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of Glaucoma. These guidelines recommend that certain areas of Glaucoma-related work should be undertaken only by an optometrist with a specialist qualification or who is working under the supervision of a consultant ophthalmologist.


  Instillation of Diagnostic Eye Drops in general optometric practice

The use of diagnostic drugs is a routine and essential part of optometric practice. Correct use of appropriate drugs will often be needed for the refraction of children and young adults under cycloplegia; similarly for the examination of the external eye, ocular media and fundus.
