Application and Enrolment
You have two years from the date you graduate or complete the Optometry Progression Scheme and are awarded your Certificate of Clinical Competency to enrol on the Scheme for Registration.
To enrol as a pre-registration trainee you must:
- Have obtained a degree in optometry of at least a lower second class honours standard from an institution whose course is approved by the GOC for direct entry to pre-registration training;
- Have a valid Certificate of Clinical Competence (this is valid for two years from the date of the award of your degree, successful completion of the Optometry Progression Scheme or the last date of your enrolment as a pre-registration trainee). Normally a Certificate of Clinical Competence will be awarded to all trainees who
graduate with a 2.2 grade or above.
- Be on the GOC Student Register. You must maintain this Student Optometrist registration throughout your Scheme for Registration training.
Please see the "Schedule of Fees" document.
The College has an agreement with a number of companies for fees to be paid directly by the head offices. The companies to whom this applies will be included on the enrolment form and you must tick the relevant box on the form. If you work for one of these companies you
do not need to send the fee with the form. Please double check with your employer regarding payment arrangements.
For all other applicants the fee must be sent with the form. If you are paying by credit/debit card please indicate this on the form and we will contact you to take payment.
The fees cover up to four Stage 1 Work-based Assessment visits, one stage 2 visit and your first attempt at the Final Assessment. The fees do not include further visits from your College Assessor or Final Assessment resits. Please see the Schedule of Fees for confirmation of all applicable fees.
Within seven working days of receiving your form we will send you:
- Your official start date (this will be the date we receive your form and fee or the date your placement begins, whichever is later);
- The name of your College Assessor;
- A copy of the Scheme for Registration Trainee Handbook
- A receipt for the Scheme for Registrations fees if you have requested one.
We will send your Supervisor a copy of the Supervisor?s Handbook.
If we are unable to process your enrolment form within seven working days we will contact you within that time to explain why and request any further information we require.
The information form is used to tell us the details of your pre-registration position. You
should return this form to us as soon as you have found a placement. The enrolment form can only be returned to us once you have received your degree result. This gives us more details about your Pre-Registration position. You should make sure we receive this before you start work.
Complete the Scheme for Registration Enrolment Form. When this is issued it will be on our website and you will be able to download it onto your SfR memory stick.
You will also find a document called Guidance for Trainees Completing the Scheme for Registration Enrolment Form. Please read these notes carefully before filling in the form.
Your designated Scheme for Registration Supervisor is required to fill in a section of the enrolment form so you must pass the form and accompanying guidance notes to your supervisor. If you have more than one Supervisor there is space on the form for additional
supervisors to add their details.
Either you or the Supervisor will send the form to the College. If your Supervisor is sending the form on your behalf please ensure he/she sends the form on time.
Forms must be sent at least seven days before your planned start date in practice. If you have not received a letter confirming your enrolment before you begin work please contact us urgently on 0207 766 4365.
The newest version of the form will be available from 1st June on the College website. It will also update on your SfR memory stick.
