Safeguarding training for pre-registration trainees

The College now offers all pre-registration trainees access to free online training on safeguarding children and safeguarding adults.

Completion of safeguarding training will help you to meet the requirements for your application to join the NHS performers list.

If you are a current pre-registration trainee you can access the safeguarding training now.

Safeguarding training is considered good practice for all optometry professionals and helps to ensure you are able to comply with the GOC’s Standards of practice.

Our training modules for pre-registration trainees were developed by DOCET (Directorate for Optometric Continuing Education and Training).  They meet the required Level 2/Core standards and are GOC and Optical Confederation approved.

As well as completing the online training modules you should also familiarise yourself with the Optical Confederation’s Guidance on safeguarding, mental capacity and the Prevent strategy, which the College of Optometrists refers to in its Guidance for professional practice

If you have passed the OSCE and are a fully qualified optometrist you will not be able to access the safeguarding training here. Fully qualified optometrists should use the equivalent free safeguarding training available from DOCET, for which you can also earn CET points.

Please note: once you are fully qualified you cannot earn CET points retrospectively for safeguarding training completed through the College as a pre-registration trainee – you will need to complete the training again through the DOCET website to earn CET points.
