Can optometrists sell or supply P medicines that are in line with their professional practice?

Sorry if it sounds daft, but came across this in one of the course notes that I attended, but have always been under the impression that a signed order was required for the patient to get it from a pharmacy.

P meds cannot be supplied to patients except in an emergency - at the moment.

If it is not an emergency, the patient can get the meds from a pharmacy with (or without) a signed order

The law is under review and proposes 3 things:

1. P meds can be supplied by optoms at any time.

2. Two new lists of exempt meds to be drawn up - one for all optoms, one for those with only a Therapeutic licence

3. Optoms be granted supplementary prescriber status.

John,

Any idea when points 2 & 3 will happen?
