I am not entirely sure of all the courses-papillitis and papilloedema would be two, tumours--any other suggestions? I am not sure if disc swelling would cause blurry disc margins

blurry disk margins and details of the disk is due to oedema at the disk head. This is caused when the pressure behind the optic disk is greater than allows for normal perfusion, thus it happens in increased intra cranial pressures. Usually, the blurriness / (read oedema) is subtle and hard to see. If the intra cranial pressure was high enough to cause oedema caused disk swelling - then you may get other signs of problems - headaches and sickness, and also disk haemorrhages etc.
