Giving Rx out
May 04, 2005 21:33:25 Just was a bit confused, would you give a Rx out to a patient at the end of the sight test even though you are referring them ( for e.g. suspicion of glaucoma) or do u hold it until outcome of referral is known. |

RE: Giving Rx out
May 05, 2005 19:09:56 yes - give it out. You can add comments on it directing any dispenser what you intended or any outcome. But you must give it out. If it was a referal that could change the vision (for example diabetes suspected) - then you could always give the old 'unchanged' Rx with a reccommendation to recheck after treatment. |

RE: Giving Rx out
May 06, 2005 12:46:18 A prescription does not have to be given out if the patient is being referred. This is a specific exemption from that duty under the law.
The law does require, however that you issue a statement that the examination has been carried out in accordance with the regulations, and if you are referring the patient, the reason for the referral. |

RE: Giving Rx out
May 09, 2005 21:43:29 sorry to be thick, are you meant to add, in comments box, eg. 'referred suspect glaucoma' ? or do you just tick refer to gp, and write in comments box'do not supply specs till all clear given' or something like that? i don't always want to fully clarify my worries to the Px at time of test... |

RE: Giving Rx out
May 10, 2005 00:02:26 A new requirement that has been slipped in to the new section 60 order (and not mentioned in the optom press) is the following:
1.Immediately following a sight test issue a statement that the examination has been carried out in accordance with the regulations and whether the patient has been referred to a doctor or not.
(no change from previous regs)
2. If the patient is being referred a statement of the reason for referral must be issued.
(new regs) |
