May 24, 2005 10:05:05 why do we need to measure the vertical palpebral aperture in cl fitting
and when do most people fit soft torics

May 24, 2005 19:25:08 The only reason I can think of is so that you could monitor any change due to cl wear. I fit soft torics when the astigmatism affects the vision and aspherics don't improve it. This can be as low as 0.75DC and as high as 2.00DC (if the dominant eye has a low cyl). |

May 26, 2005 01:31:49 Good question!I often find many of the measurements you are expected to take do not reflect modern contact lens practice. Old hard (PMMA) lenses and RGP'S can sometimes result in decreased vertical palpebral aperture. So if you want to monitor that? I am surprised they do not ask you to measure eyelash length, aperture eccentricity, lid elasticity etc etc.Waste of time! I generally would be thinking about soft torics when astigmatism got to -1.oo but would normally trial an aspheric first to see how the patient got on. Often even higher amounts of astigmatism are happy with aspherics compared to torics.
