Can anyone clarify the referral route for uveitis? my notes say emergency, but dont state type, px symptoms, acute/chronic etc

Any help is greatly appreciated

Not really sure exactly what you're asking, but uveitis is a same day referral to ophthalmology, and enough of an emergency to justify by passing the GP.

 

Chronic uveitis patients are hopefully known to HES, and many of them are clued up enough to self refer. If you do see a chronic flare up though, i'd still refer in the same way. Most ophthalmologists prefer to get pt started on steroids ASAP, even a delay of 24 hours starting treatment can prolong a flare up considerably.

My flat mate came in with a red eye and it happened to be acute anterior uveitis. Sent him straight to eye casulty. Obviously ring the eye casulty and tell them px is on their way and send a covering letter to gp to inform him of the situation. If you look at the college of optometrists referral criteria it says emergency referral i.e same day! Hope this helps
