I was reading Review of Optometry and came across an article discribing orbital lymphoma. This will give a decrease in myopia as you discribe. My initial thought was a cortical cataract, I have seen changes in refraction with that also.

true - it would - but more commonly would be idiopathic ematropisation - ie the eye goes long sighted on its own and overshoots ematropia. It could be also caused by thickening of the choroid or any number of other causes.

Thanks very much guys. I did think about some form of orbital SOL, but he had no motility, visual field or colour vision defect etc.
