I was thinking, for fun, how all the optical knowledge can be reduced to a few simple laws. My tutors at college never told me these - I learned the hard way!

The most important being

KISS - keep it safe and simple

Murphy's Law - expect the unexpected to happen unexpectedly, or is it what can go wrong - WILL!

Less is More - never give the whole whack - if you get get away with less.

The cost of a product or its urgency will always be directly related to the probability of it being lost in the post.

never do anything without arranging an escape route.

clinically that means when ever you do -work out before hand how to proceed if it goes wrong.

business, it means don't stick the neck out - or sign anything without without a get out clause being added.

Never offer to do a quick adjustment: The frame will always break

If the only excuse for not doing a test is that you can't be arsed, then do it.

A picture paints a thousand words. A badly drawn diagram works wonders when explaining anything slightly technical.

A quick look always takes an hour and an emergency referral.
