Access to patient records
Oct 06, 2005 10:18:51 A patient has asked for 'a copy of her records' to be sent to her home address. Will a summary of her visits suffice, or must I photocopy them all and supply a list of abbreviations etc?

RE: Access to patient records
Oct 06, 2005 11:14:27 Ring up the AOP. Ask for advice.
You need to make sure from the patient why is it that she requires from her records. The earlier the AOP is informed the better in cases of litigation.
Sometimes they think they need their records to move from you to a different optician in another area. In that case a copy of her latest prescription would suffice. |

RE: Access to patient records
Oct 07, 2005 19:33:23 The law is quite clear. You must provide a copy of records to a patient on request. This means a photocopy of the whole record. The law does allow you to take "reasonable" time to comply with the request and charge a "reasonable" amount for the work involved.
However, in this case, why don't you ask what exactly is required, and politely enquire if there are any issues you can help resolve. There might be a simple explanation: one patient of mine had her hospital records lost, and decided she was going to keep copies of all health-related records in future! I can't balme her! |
