Oct 14, 2005 10:45:56 both - trial frame for the small and elderly. Some patients think the phoropter doesn't do a good job. I have always used nidek stuff - ver user friendly and reliable |

RE: Phoropter Head or Trial Frame
Oct 14, 2005 19:03:29 I am with smurfitt - trial frame on old or very small. Phoropter on the rest - its accurate - has good px appeal - and is much more scientific. I know the usual AO type machine - classic and remodeled by all the companies - its nice. The Topcon one is also nice. I have very few non tols with phoropter - but sometimes I combine and use both on same px. I would suggest a standard one from a reputable maker, new or second hand (they last for ever -just make sure the lenses are clean). You will need an arm for it to go onto yr console. The accuracy is due to technique only - and setting it up correctly. Remember college abt setting trial frame to PD's before you start? No one bothers after they qualify do they. Its vital on a phoropter. Nidek are lovely - |

RE: Phoropter Head or Trial Frame
Oct 14, 2005 19:05:19 I used both, for young adults up to 55's(phoropter) and confirm with trial frame on new or high Rx. Elderly and child only trial frame.
this is because the new Rx or High Rx has to be check as close as posible as the real situation.( walk, VDU use, etc)
Phoropter is used for easier and quicker refraction and subjective, but trial frame alone will do perfectly.
The phoropter is look nicer at the testing room. |

RE: Phoropter Head or Trial Frame
Oct 14, 2005 22:11:53 Having used both, I don't see any real disadvantages of using a trial frame. Refractions can be carried out just as quickly and accurately if not more. There are plenty of situations where one couldn't really do without good old trial frame. The phoropter usually ends up being more hassle than its worth....though I do know friends who'd almost quit if their phoropter was taken away ! |

RE: Phoropter Head or Trial Frame
Oct 15, 2005 15:28:45 I agree with your comment about it being more hassle than its worth. However, I have been using my auto-phoropter a lot more recently after asking you guys last year which was best - trial frame or phoropter. I tend to gain good repeatable results with over 45's with little accommodation with the phoropter. Younger patients tend to like overminused Rx's. However, I prefer my trusty grey trial frame - just as quick and probably more accurate. No problems!
I remember never ever having a recheck during my whole pre-reg year using a trial frame a few years back. But I've had a few rechecks with the phoropter since! This fact speaks for itself! |
