Milton Solution is a 1% aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite, containing 16.5% sodium chloride commonly used for the disinfection of baby bottles. The CLs DO where I work recommends this for the removal of protein deposition on RGPs. A ten minute soak cleans the lens quiet effectively but, apart from bleaching the tints, is there any downside to this. It's cheaper than protein removal tablets and he thinks it gives just as good results without as much hassle.

Obviously the lenses are dried and any excess solutions are washed off using saline or multi-purpose sols.

Milton is a sterilising solution. It can be used to decontaminate hard lenses for re-use per college guidelines. It is known to change the spec and can change the surface condition after 200 cleans . I can't see why it would remove protein from lenses - surely daily cleaner is for that? It would denature the protein though. To disinfect - I think it takes 4 hours, if memory serves me, so ten minutes won't do that much to the bacteria living on the lens surface.

the old milton trick! yes was commonly used in the darker years before disposability. still effective today though i prefer at least an hour followed by thorough rinsing, rgp cleaner and a good soak.
