We're currently in the process of recruiting a trainee DO at our independent practice. Can anyone give any advice as to typical salaries, holidays, terms and conditions etc that you may use. Is it common practice for the trainee to attend college on their 'day off'?

Thanks in advance.

Does a trainee DO need to be continuously supervised?

Yes thats what we do however our trainee DO tels us that all his college mates still get a day off too. We need him in the practice for and a half days plus hes practice manager so he gets paid very well and this compensates for the lack of day off!

Between £12K -£15K for trainees in non manging roles seems to be what his friends are being paid, Upwards of that for more senior trainee DO's with management roles in the practice.

The course fees are paid for most trainees and exam fees and holidays are 4 weeks and if you are feeling generous one week study leave !

YES absolouteley supervised at all times, meaning he never works without an optometrist/ other qualified DO in the practice in case needs measurements/ things checked.

a college day should be classed as a work day.

£12- £15K seems a little generous for a trainee DO with little optical experience, definitely in comparison with a dodgy optom pre reg salary! Do others agree with this rate? How does it vary with 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year etc? TA.

I would suggest having a large salary range dependent on experience. Good people are definately worth it. We pay between 14k-15k for an ex-multiple dep-manager + fees + exams + time off for block release & exams + a large profit related bonus. They are worth it. However I also previously paid 9k for someone new to optics who wasn't (was not kept on after probation).

I did it on Palfi's advice (I think) that valued, motivated staff are a huge asset to any practice.

Tie fees into a contract, they have to repay if they leave.

Base their bonus around what makes them tick.

Poach from multiples. You get the business training, work ethic. you can entice with the caring, sharing, ethical indie thing

Good luck
