Author Subject: What can I expect from my Pre-Registration Supervisor?

I am convinced that my Supervisor is pretty useless. Shows little interest in my pre-registration, and had never really queried about my learning and development. She has on frequent occasions shown that she knows very little.

Which makes me wonder, what can I expect from a pre-registration supervisor? Am i expecting too much? Are they there merely to check that your not doing anything drastically dangerous or illegal. Or are they supposed to be actively involved in the learning and preparation process for any exams.

This is taken from the student area of this website

"The Role of the Pre-Registration Supervisor The Supervisor provides the key to the trainee’s success in developing their clinical skills during the pre registration period. Supervisors provide on-going support for the trainee, performing the role of tutor and mentor and discussing progress at regular monthly reviews. Supervisors ensure that trainees develop good practice and have access to opportunities to evidence their competence, including finding alternative venues such as hospitals or specialist settings if necessary." The pre-registration year is a partnership (albeit an unequal one in that you should do most of the work) if you feel that your supervisor is not pulling their weight you need to have that discussion with them. I would suggest diplomatically! If you feel you are still not getting the support you need you should discuss it with your College assessor. Pre-regs. have been known to change practices and supervisors, much as I would change jobs if I was unhappy with my employerand or work environment but it is a big step and not always easy or sensible.

Your right, in that, it aint sensible to be changing Supervisors at this stage (mid-way through year). I will try discussing with her.

You suggested that I should speak to my Assessor. I did consider it, but didn't think he was capable to do anything. Apart from perhaps some moral support.
