dispensing
May 07, 2006 19:56:33 hi, i was just wondering if anyone had any information about the dispensing part of the final examinations. looking at the final exams format i cant see where things like facial and frame measurements, and discussing frame and lens materials etc would lie. i'm getting a little confused!! any help would be much appreciated! |

RE: dispensing
May 09, 2006 22:17:50 Sorry for the delay fbegum - I have asked the college for you about this and am still awaiting an answer. I think you will need experience in all the above of what you say. The guideline is to have the requisite to be a safe practitioner - so you will be expected to be able to take PD's in squints and others. To take basic frame measurements like length to bend and head width etc. To measure for various lenses (varifocal heights etc) and also to use the focimeter. Lens types and materials - yes you will need to know the difference between hard and soft varifocals etc. Don't forget safety glasses and the various British Standards. I know it is starting to sound alot = but if you contact the College Library - they may have a text book for you to borrow. Do you want me to go into greater depth? Is what I have said helping you, please? - steve |

May 10, 2006 21:00:19 I discussed your question with our College librarian today - she suggested that Colin Fowlers Dispensing book may help you. She said that she has a copy in at present and you may borrow it to read if you like. steve |

May 11, 2006 20:05:43 hi, thanks that really helps. i was aware of the other things as i was asked about those in quarterly assessments, but havent had to do any frame or facial measurements other than varifocal markings and focimetering. |

RE: dispensing
May 11, 2006 20:54:14 The face and frame measuring is not too difficult, just practice. Don't forget that if they are not binocular you can put lenses to frame centres. Don't forget the trip wires of anisomtropic Rx's - small frames, slab-off lenses etc. If you have a dispenser in practice ask them to show you some of the ropes and some of the tricks! All the best - if I can do any more -just ask - steven |
