hi! i was going through , ocular disease and abnormality competencies for the final day assessment. i came across the following: 6.4 An understanding of risk factors of common ocular conditions 6.14 An understanding of the treatment of a range of common ocular diseases.

Any sugestions what are common ocular conditions? (apart from cataracts, glaucoma, arm, diabetic retinopathy which have already been mentioned as part of the other competencies)

also

6.18 The ability to manage patients presenting with sight- threatening eye disease. any other examples of sight threatening eye diseases? the ones i could think of is retinal detatchments, GCA, optic neuritis

all suggestions are welcome

thanks in advance

think the college have a manual with different ocular conditions and referral criteria etc.. This includes a long list of different ocular emergencies also..

-Yes there is quite a few - time to get the old text books out.

Don't forget that INO is fairly common in people with multiple sclerosis - and looks like a funny squint with nystagmus. It will get better on its own - but can leave a latent nystagmus.

Also don't forget temporal arteritis and its test (ESR test). This happens with one sided head ache (throbby can be bad and deep) and can have TIA's and amourisis fugax. (emergency referal to clinic).

Have a look at Colleges referal guide which can be downloaded.

Just as a little extra point - I do think that if you have a child with an unexplained haedache - ask the mum if they have any rashes or signs of meningitis.

Remember the fields of enlarged pituitary (bitemporal defects).

-lets know how you get on

-steven

Think of the really common stuff like dry eye, conjunctivitis etc.

There will be a BV patient and could be a contact lens problem in the Final assessment stations exam.

Other sight threatening problems include advanced diabetic retinopathy (maculopathy), wet maculopathy, vascular occlusions, closed angle glaucoma, trauma, chemical burns etc.
