Recently I have been showing young people with asthenopia at near two targets and checking there ability to see the non-fixated image in physiological diplopia. The targets have been made from a barbacue stick with a notice board pin with a brightly coloured top as the actual target. One top is red and the other is white.

The idea is explored and explained in Pickwells Bin Vis Anomalies - look under physiological diplopia.

On younger children its easy to explain and in young people in general it is a very useful way to check their binocular functions at near.

I really think its a good way of looking at asthenopia at near or VDU for young people.

After further work on this idea - I do endorse it as a workable way of exploring asthenopia at near. Simply use two barbacue sticks with painted ends and get the px to 'jump' their fixation too and fro and watch their eyes reactions.

Move the sticks about closer and further and nearer the nose and up and down to get a good understanding of their binocular functions at near.

It does work on small children as well as computer workers. You can also use the method to find correcting prisms and plus spheres. steve
