hi

i was reading the section on good optometric practice in the colllege handbook. i came across a section on cl fitting and dispensing and wanted clarification on one of the points made under the info section

the section states that unless the practioner presribes personally they must not begin the fitting of cls, without specific instruction to supply them including a recent spec rx and other relevant details from a registered medical practitioner or an optometrist.

i was trying to apply this by considering a situation where a patient has had a sight test done elsewhere and presents to another practice for a cl consulatation. if the patient brings a copy of their spec rx can we still go ahead with the consulatation even though we do not have other RELEVANT DETAILS from a reg optom/med practitioner (we will do a slitlamp routine etc as part of the cl consultation)??

mant thanks

I read that section to be when an assistant or dispenser is acting under the direction of the optometrist.

If you look at section 27.07 under 'newest' 'fitting powered contact lenses' it states that the px must have an uptodate prescription. Thats all. That reflects current practice - where a px tested by A can go to B for a fitting of contact lenses as long as their Rx is not out of date (and it does not say ' not suitable for contact lenses'.
