New legal director for opticians regulator

27 June 2007

The General Optical Council (GOC) has appointed a new Director of Legal and Fitness to Practise.

Philip Grey will take up the role at the end of next month. He will oversee the investigation and prosecution of allegations against registrants and advise the Council on other legal matters. Philip replaces Caroline Withall, who is returning to full time education.

GOC registrar Peter Coe said: “Philip promises to be a great asset to the Council. He has a strong background in regulation and I am sure will bring both energy and experience to the role.”

A Barrister called in 1996, Philip previously held the post of in-house advocate and legal advisor to the General Medical Council (GMC). Prior to joining the GMC, he worked in private practice. Philip is an approved advocacy trainer with Gray’s Inn and brings a wealth of experience to the role.
