Opticians to have registration cards

18 June 2007

The General Optical Council (GOC) is issuing all fully-registered optometrists and dispensing opticians with a registration card.

The wallet-sized cards are being sent out with the summer 2007 issue of Bulletin, and are designed to serve as a reminder of registration details. Each card is printed with the registrant’s name, GOC number, registration category (optometrist or dispensing optician), and the next registration renewal deadline. Contact details for Vantage and the GOC are also included on the cards.

GOC registrar, Peter Coe, commented: “These cards are not proof of registration, but they will make it easier for patients to check their optician is registered. All the information they need to search our online registers or to contact our registration team directly, is readily available. Registrants will also have a convenient reminder of their GOC details and renewal date.”

Providing they keep their registration up to date, the Council will issue registrants with a new card on a yearly basis, following the annual retention deadline in March. If an optometrist or dispensing optician is removed from the registers for any reason, they must return their registration card to the GOC.

Student registrants will be issued with registration cards at the start of the 2007-8 academic year.

Fully-registered optometrists or dispensing opticians who do not receive their registration card with the summer 2007 issue of Bulletin should contact the GOC registration team on 020 7580 3898 (option 1).
