Leading eye surgeon runs marathon for eye research charity

12 February 2008

Mrs Jan Knight, an ophthalmic surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust is planning to raise £3K for leading eye research charity, Fight for Sight, by running this year’s Flora London Marathon.

Mrs Knight is well known in ophthalmic circles for her innovative system of flexible job planning, which helped to reduce the waiting list for cataract surgery at the Trust from around nine months to three months in just three years.  Her high volume approach to surgery cut wasted theatre sessions by about 85%; patients have benefited from months of improved sight.

She said: “I’m really pleased to be running the marathon for Fight for Sight as it is a cause very close to my heart. 100 people start to lose their sight every day in the UK so there is a great need for more eye research.”

Rowena Finn, Fight for Sight events officer, said: “We’re delighted that Jan is running the marathon for us. She is a very well respected ophthalmic surgeon who is fighting our cause to beat blindness and eye disease.”
