BCLA President Brings New Perspective To The Role
BCLA President Brings New Perspective To The Role
16 June 2008
An ophthalmologist with a special interest in medical contact lens practice and low vision is the new President of the British Contact Lens Association.
Sarah Janikoun began her year of office at the Association’s 32nd Clinical Conference and Exhibition, held in Birmingham, UK from May 29-June 1.
Sarah currently works at St Thomas’ Hospital in London where her role encompasses general ophthalmology, diabetic eye care, provision of the low vision service and paediatric contact lenses. She has a Harley Street practice which is primarily involved in contact lens troubleshooting.
She also has experience in optometric teaching, giving evening lectures to pre-registration students at the London Refraction Hospital, now the Institute of Optometry. She has examined for the College of Optometrists’ Professional Qualifying Examinations and taught trainee dispensing opticians at City and Islington College.
Sarah was the first President of MCLOSA, the Medical Contact Lens and Ocular Surface Association for ophthalmologists, and has been a Fellow of the Medical Society of London for many years.
Commenting on her latest role, Sarah says: ‘The BCLA is an extraordinary society where so many strands of healthcare come together for the benefit of the professions and the lens-wearing community.
‘I’m very keen to encourage all those interested in, or dealing in contact lenses to become part of our family, and I’m also concerned that the BCLA become even more responsive to its members’ needs. We’re about to embark on major research into the role of the BCLA and the services it provides. I shall try, during this year, to address some of the issues this raises.’
