11 March 2002

This year the College's AGM and CET day will be held in Newcastle at the Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park on Monday 22 April. The programme contains a mix of clinical and non-clinical subjects with a maximum of 4 CET credits available. Places are limited, and are filling fast, so book your place soon.

Professor Gordon Dutton, a consultant ophthalmologist in Glasgow and Visiting Professor at Glasgow Caledonian University will be speaking on Visual Problems due to Brain Damage in Children. Dr David Colin-Thomé, National Clinical Director for Primary Care will be speaking on the role of the new primary care organisations. Bill Harvey, clinical editor of Optician and Boots Optician's Tutor-Practitioner at City University will be speaking on Glaucoma, and Kevin Lewis, a private practitioner in Essex and College Council member will be talking on Gas Permeable lenses and Corneal Topography.

Dr June Crown CBE, who will be giving the Charter Lecture, was chair of the Review of the Prescribing, Supply and Administration of Medicines, the report of which was published in 1999. The review recommends the further extension of prescribing rights to other health professionals and the Government is implementing its recommendations. She will be talking on the way in which this may affect optometrists.

In parallel to the lecture programme, two seminars will run on Record Keeping and on Clinical Audit and Patient Communication. Gordon Carson, Professional Services Manager at Dollond & Aitchison will deliver two seminars on Record Keeping. Dr Andrew Jack of Business Excellence International, who is currently working with the College on the CAPs survey, will deliver the seminars on Clinical Audit.

Within the day, the College will also hold its AGM to which all members are invited. This year, discussion groups will be formed to talk about some key issues with which the Committees of the College are involved. This will enable members to meet College Council members and staff and provide an opportunity to discuss their views.

All College members are invited to attend the AGM and Charter Lecture. Attendance of the CET programme will cost £70.50 including VAT for College members and £141 for non-members. To register, please contact the Communications Department at the College on telephone number 020 7766 4343 or email - pr@college-optometrists.org.
