Right to Read Campaign on College Agenda
10 November 2003
MPs and Peers attended a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Eye Health and Visual Impairment on Tuesday 28 October at the House of Commons. Attendees and speakers, including famous author Joanna Trollope, discussed the Right to Read campaign.
The Right to Read Charter calls upon Government to provide more funding and for publishers and libraries to make more books available to people with sight problems and dyslexia. Every day 3 million children and adults are denied the right to read due to a sight problem, dyslexia or a reading disability. An astonishing 95 per cent of all books, magazines and other publications never become available in large print, audio or braille.
“I firmly believe that everyone should have the same opportunity to enjoy the pleasure of reading. I applaud the efforts of this campaign to make more books available in accessible formats,” said Bryony Pawinska, Chief Executive of the College of Optometrists.
The Right to Read Alliance are urging members of the public who care about reading to sign the Right to Read charter online at
