MPs & Peers Visit Boots Laser Eye Clinic

03 October 2003

Members of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Eye Health and Visual Impairment visited Boots Opticians and Laser Eye Clinic on Tuesday 21 October 2003. The visit included a guided tour, which was given by David Cartwright, Director of Professional Services at Boots and Vice President of The College of Optometrists. Mr Cartwright began with the optical practice, where one Member of the Group noted that in a recent routine eye examination, his Optometrist spotted an irregularity and referred him to his GP. The MPs and Peers were also able to examine a treatment room, the equipment and the laser itself. The patient journey, from consultation, to treatment to post operative care, was discussed.

Laser eye correction treatment is used to correct short and long-sightedness and astigmatism. It is a simple, virtually painless procedure that has offered millions of people around the world long-term freedom from glasses or contact lenses. An advanced form of laser eye correction called LASIK is used at Boots. Dr Joanna McGraw stressed that only those suitable for laser eye surgery are recommended for the procedure. Baroness Gardner of Parkes, a former dentist in general practice, was pleased that both the lay and health professional point of view were covered and said, “I found the visit very interesting and informative.”
