College AGM/CET Day in Waltham Abbey a great success

27 March 2003

This year the College's AGM and CET day was held in Waltham Abbey, Essex, at the Marriott Hotel, on Monday 24 March 2003. An excellent line up of speakers presented at the event and covered a range of stimulating topics, making the AGM and CET day a great success.

The exciting programme included the College's prestigious biennial George Giles Lecture, which was delivered by Professor Gordon Dutton, Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow. The title of Professor Dutton's lecture was "Seeing Things Which Aren't There: Common Illusions and Hallucinations." The lecture discussed the range of visual symptomatology that patients may present with, and strategies to determine the origin of the problem.

Professor Bernard Gilmartin, Professor of Optometry at Aston University, also presented a lecture entitled "Myopia Update: An Optometric Perspective." Professor Bertil Damto, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, presented a lecture on Ocular Tumours. Dr Clare O'Donnell, Clinic Manager at UMIST, spoke on Contact Lens Fitting After Refractive Surgery and Dr David Thomson, Senior Lecturer at City University, gave a lecture about Children's Vision Screening. In parallel to the lecture programme, two workshops ran on Communication Skills and on Visual Field Analysis.

Within the day, the College also held its AGM to which all members were invited. This included a discussion group session, which enabled members to meet College Council members and staff and provided a useful opportunity for a two-way exchange of views on the issues relating to the work of the College Council and its Committees.
