The College of Optometrists will be Opening Eyes, Minds and Doors when it opens to the public on Sunday, September 18th as part of Londons annual Open House weekend. As in previous years this will be a great opportunity for many practitioners to see inside the headquarters of their professional and examining body, including the exhibits of the British Optical Association Museum that feature in various parts of the building.

The Government is undertaking a review, led by Andrew Foster, of the regulation of a broad range of healthcare professions, including optometry and dispensing optics. Following a recent workshop to discuss the review at which the optical profession was fully represented, the College has issued a response to the Departments Call for Ideas.

The College of Optometrists is to launch a new website as part of its Jubilee year celebrations. The new look website, to be launched on Thursday 01 September, will be more comprehensive, easier to navigate and will contain all the latest news from the College and the industry as a whole.

The College of Optometrists hosted a special buffet and Ceilidh to thank volunteers from the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes GB programme (SOLIOE). The event took place on Sunday 03 July at Glasgows Marriott Hotel. Past President, Frank Munro, who hosted the event said it was a pleasure to host this evening in recognition of the important work the volunteers undertook at the Special Olympics National Summer Games.

The GOC has given provisional approval to the College to roll out the New Scheme for Registration to pre registration trainees from this summer.

The College of Optometrists has produced revised guidance to its Members following changes to the Opticians Act that take effect this week.

In January, at the regular meeting between the College and the GOC, the GOC declared that they were very pleased with the Colleges continuing progress with the development of the new Scheme for Registration of UK trained optometrists.

The Colleges annual Diploma Presentation Ceremony, held on Wednesday 26 January 2005 proved to be a great success. Two ceremonies were held at Londons Guildhall to accommodate over 1000 people.

As part of the celebrations to mark its Silver Jubilee, and forming part of its 2-day Annual Conference, the College is holding a Silver Jubilee Dinner at the Imperial War Museum North, Manchester, on Sunday 20 March 2005.
