College Hosts Opening Eyes Ceilidh
04 July 2005
The College of Optometrists hosted a special buffet and Ceilidh to thank volunteers from the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes GB programme (SOLIOE). The event took place on Sunday 03 July at Glasgow’s Marriott Hotel. Past President, Frank Munro, who hosted the event said “it was a pleasure to host this evening in recognition of the important work the volunteers undertook at the Special Olympics National Summer Games”.
This year's biggest UK sporting event took place from 02 - 09 July when Glasgow hosted the seventh Special Olympics Great Britain National Games – attracting more than 2,500 athletes with learning disabilities. Volunteers from the Opening Eyes Programme were on hand at their marquee in the Olympic Village to perform vision screening, eye examinations, and to provide prescription spectacles, sports eyewear and sunglasses, all offered completely free of charge, to the athletes. Many of the glasses were made on site, and available for collection during the games.
Speaking at the Ceilidh, Frank Munro commented: “it is a well-recognised fact that the people with learning disabilities who gather at the Special Olympics are far more likely to suffer some sort of visual impairment than other groups in society.” He went on to describe how analysis of the screenings the last time the Special Olympics took place in Cardiff in 2001 revealed 15% of the group will never have had an optometric eye examination, despite a high proportion requiring some sort of corrective treatment, adding: “providing this free clinical care offers an instant boost to the athlete’s performance in the sporting arena and can help improve their quality of life as a whole. In addition optometrists are given the perfect opportunity to increase their understanding and awareness of learning disability.”
