College publishes updated Guidance

The College of Optometrists has produced revised guidance to its Members following changes to the Opticians Act that take effect this week. One of the areas covered by the guidance is the changes relating to the fitting and supply of contact lenses, including providing clarification on the responsibilities of a registered optometrist “generally directing” the sale or supply of contact lenses and on the duty to provide aftercare.

The College has developed the guidance via its Guidance Review Group, which includes representatives from the AOP and the GOC as an observer, as well as consulting with ABDO and FODO. Chief Executive, Bryony Pawinska commented “The College has developed our guidance in consultation with the other optical bodies, from which we have received thanks for our collaborative approach and efficient turn-around of what is detailed and complex paperwork. One of the College’s fundamental roles is to act as a guide for our Members, enabling them to understand the implication of regulation as it applies to their day-to-day practice. We will continue to review our guidance to ensure it does just that.”

The guidance is now available via the College website www.college-optometrists.org
