Harrogate Optometrist raises 1,300 in Great North Run

22 September 2005

Optometrist Andrew Elder Smith recently took part in the Great North Run in September to help raise money for leading blindness charity Fight for Sight.

Mr Smith, 46, who works at his practice AJ Elder Smith in Victoria Street, Harrogate said: “My time of 2hours 3 minutes and 57 seconds was a little slower than the 2 hours I had hoped for - but the temperature was about 10 degrees higher than I expected. In fact it seemed hotter on the day than during any of my training runs throughout the summer!“

“I didn’t suffer any blisters - just mild sunburn. The whole day was an amazing experience and very well organised. If all the pledges are redeemed I will have raised over £1300.”

“Having worked as an optometrist for 25 years I’ve seen all the great developments which have come out of research into eye disease and I felt it is very important to support continuing research – that was why I chose to raise money for Fight for Sight.”
