College Revises Guidance on Maximum Number of Trainees per Supervisor

The current College ruling regarding ratio of trainees to supervisors states that supervisors may only employ a second trainee if the existing trainee has successfully completed the Work-based Assessment and has sat the Final Assessment of the Scheme for Registration and been unsuccessful in one or more sections.

In considering the more flexible arrangements regarding application to the Final Assessment of the new Scheme for Registration, the College has now revised this ruling with immediate effect such that supervisors may take on a second trainee within the following parameters:

  • that the first trainee has undertaken the third quarterly Work-based Assessment;
  • that there are sufficient facilities within the practice for both trainees to have the sole use of a consulting room for the testing of sight for a minimum of 20 hours a week;
  • that the clinical and educational experience of the second trainee would not be diminished in any way by the continued employment of the first trainee, and that a high standard of training would be maintained for both trainees.

Commenting on this change Jo Mullin, Head of Education at the College said “we welcome the opportunity to help employers by allowing them more flexibility in planning the recruitment of pre-registration trainees”.
