Community pulls together for Fight for Sight

11 May 2006

The people of Ashington in Northumberland are pulling together to help 14 month hold Jessica Smith who suffers from Lebers Congenital Amorousis – an eye disease which means she can only see light.

Friends and family joined Jessica’s mum Lindsey Smith, 22, in a Boxing Day dip at Newbiggin-by-the-sea raising over £1,800.

The community also held a charity night in February where several men had their heads and chests shaved and there was also a disco and buffet and a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses. This raised £1,000.

More recently they held a party for the Queen’s birthday which raised £400 and another event is planned for September.

Lindsey, who lives in Rosalind St said: “I have been overwhelmed by the support everyone has given me. This is a small community and everyone has been getting involved – there have been loads of people I don’t even know coming to our events.”

“I’m really grateful for everyone’s support and would like to say thank you to them all.”

Lindsey decided to donate the money raised to Fight for Sight after a conversation with Jessica’s consultant. She said: “Research into gene therepy is the best chance for Jessica so the money we raise is going to Fight for Sight to help fund their research.”
