The Health Foundations Engaging With Quality Initiative

23 January 2006

Engaging With Quality in Primary Care – call for outline proposals.

The Health Foundation is seeking applications for the Engaging with Quality in Primary Care awards.  The £2.4 million investment will fund up to 6 projects which will engage primary care clinicians in the quality improvement process and, by doing so, increase capacity for improvements in clinical quality in primary care.

What type of projects will be supported?
We will fund projects that aim to improve clinical quality in primary care.

Projects must have two dimensions:

  • They must involve identifying and measuring the quality of healthcare from clinicians’ and patients’ point of view compared with the evidence of best practice.
  • They must involve interventions to improve quality, for example education and training activities.
Projects must be focussed on issues that are commonly presented in primary care and where significant improvements in clinical quality are known to be possible or focussed on a population group that is defined by their health needs rather than a specific disease.

All projects should be led by clinicians, but if the lead clinicians are specialists, primary care clinicians must also be included in the implementation of the project.

Who can apply?
Any organisation may apply that can demonstrate that their project will be led by clinicians and will involve primary care clinicians in settings outside hospitals.

Organisations may apply for an award on their own, in partnership with other professional organisations or in collaboration with other relevant organisations such as patient organisations or academic departments.

What is the application process and timetable?
Outline proposals must be submitted by 31 March 2006.  Short listed applicants will then be invited to take part in a project development process in June 2006.  A full application will be required by August 2006 and final decisions will be made by the end of 2006.
