Contact lens wearers using ReNu MoistureLoc® made by Bausch & Lomb have been advised to stop using the product. ReNu MoistureLoc® is a soft contact lens, multi-purpose solution.
An increase in ocular Fusarium infections has occurred in Hong Kong, Singapore and the US. A root cause for these infections has not been found, but a disproportionate number of those infected used ReNu MoistureLoc® manufactured by Bausch & Lomb.
Investigations into this product have not revealed any issues relating to product contamination, sterility or other production related factors. However, the manufacturer has been unable to exclude the possibility that the problem may be related in some way to the formulation of the product. Therefore Bausch & Lomb has decided to withdraw ReNu MoistureLoc® worldwide.
Consumers are advised to dispose of any unused ReNu MoistureLoc® solution and exchange the empty bottle for an alternative lens care solution at the point of sale.
This is a precautionary measure taken by the manufacturer. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has no indication of any increased risk of Fusarium infections in the UK. There have been no reports of Fusarium eye infection in the UK to either the MHRA or Bausch & Lomb.
