Introduction to Supervision road shows, June 2007

15 March 2007

The College will be hosting four one-day road shows in June, entitled An Introduction to Supervision. We will be covering all aspects of supervision with a focus on the Scheme for Registration of UK -Trained Optometrists. As many of you will know, the introduction of competency-based assessment has brought some changes to supervision compared to the previous PQE 2 programme, and the road shows will explore in detail what these changes mean for the supervision of pre-registration trainees under the new framework.

We will cover, through presentations and workshops, all aspects of the Scheme for Registration including: the role of the supervisor; the role of the assessor; the relationship between the assessor, supervisor and trainee; how to prepare trainees for quarterly Work-based Assessment. There will be the opportunity to ask questions regarding all aspects of the new scheme including the Final Assessment.

The road shows will be led by Ruth Brough, the College Lead Assessor for the Scheme for Registration. In addition to the above they will discuss supervisor arrangements in detail, drawing on the experiences of supervisors and assessors currently participating in the Scheme, as well as administrative input from the College Trainee Services Co-ordinator, Lee Rolls.

Courses will run from 10.30am – 4.30pm at the following locations:

  • Thursday 14th June – Express by Holiday Inn, Bristol North (Bristol Parkway)
  • Tuesday 19th June – College of Optometrists, London
  • Wednesday 20th June – Bewley’s Hotel, Manchester Airport
  • Thursday 21st June – Holiday Inn, Glasgow Airport

The cost will be £50 per attendee, which includes lunch and refreshments for the day. Each delegate will also receive an information pack from the College. We would encourage both new and current supervisors to attend the roadshows as these will not only allow participants to be informed of or consolidate their knowledge regarding supervision and competency-based assessment, but will also provide an opportunity to meet other supervisors and share experiences and/or concerns.

If you, or other employees of your company, wish to register your interest for any of these courses can you please contact Sharon Bromley
