College Announces Second Round of Practice-based Research Awards

18 January 2008

The College of Optometrists is pleased to announce a second round of Small Grants Awards to take place as part of the College-sponsored iPROscheme (Innovation in Practice-based Research for Optometrists). The deadline for receipt of applications is 31 March 2008 with notification to successful applicants in early May 2008.

A key element of the College’s Research Strategy is to encourage and support research carried out by College Members within their community or hospital practice. The Small Grants Scheme, administered as part of iPRO, the College of Optometrists’ research support service, provides funding to enable College Members to develop research expertise by undertaking small-scale research projects with assistance and support from experienced researchers.

Applicants must be Members of the College of Optometrists and projects should aim to be completed within one year of a grant being awarded. Grant recipients will be required to submit a report of their research within three months of completion of the project.

Each grant will be worth a maximum of £10,000 and up to five grants will be allocated each year. The small grants cover the material costs of a research project and may also include paying for locum cover.

The College received thirteen applications for grants under the Scheme during the first call for applications in September and awarded three.
Details of the Small Grants Awards programme can be found on the College website. Anyone interested in applying for a grant should contact the iPRO Manager, Beverley Hancock on 0121 414 7113 or b.hancock@bham.ac.uk, who will provide advice and assistance in the preparation of submissions.
