Historic Artefacts Discovered in WCO Handover

08 August 2008

Following its successful bid to host the secretariat and provide management services to the World Council of Optometry (WCO), the College of Optometrists has now completed the handover arrangements with the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO).

During a recent handover visit to the PCO, College Chief Executive Bryony Pawinska and WCO President Bob Chappell discovered a number of historical artefacts, which will now be put on display at the College in London.

The items include a medal for a Past President of the International Optometric League (IOL), which was hosted by the College from 1927 until the WCO was founded in the US in 1995, as the successor body to the IOL.

Commenting on the handover, Bryony said: ‘Great Britain was one of the founder members of the IOL in 1927. In 1969 the League became the International Optometric and Optical League, championing practitioners around the world who were the victims of restrictive legislation in their country, and acting as a forum to share knowledge across national boundaries. The College is privileged to once again be hosting an organisation with such important aims.’

The College has appointed Ms Laura Prieto as the WCO administrator and interpreter, and will shortly be advertising for a full time WCO Executive Director.
