College Film Stresses the Importance of Regular Eye Exams

10 October 2008

Dr Susan Blakeney, Optometric Adviser to the College of Optometrists, has highlighted the importance of regular eye examinations in a short film published online by NHS Choices website.

In the four minute film Dr Blakeney stresses that the eye examination is a vital health check, assessing both the health of the eye and helping patients to see as well and as clearly as possible. Dr Blakeney goes on to discuss the importance of eye examinations, emphasising that it is essential for patients to visit their optometrist regularly, even if they feel their vision is normal.

Commenting on the film, Ian Humphreys, Director of Member Services and Communications at the College said:

“The College is committed to raising the public’s awareness of the importance of good eye health and the role of the optometrist in delivering that care. The film provided us with a fantastic opportunity to continue to raise the profile of eye health and get our vital message across to the public.”

NHS Choices is the NHS’s online service for the public. The website is designed to help patients make informed decisions about their health and social care. The website currently receives over 500,000 “hits” each week and the College has contributed to a series of articles about eye health.
