College Research Training Workshop to Focus on Evidenced-based Practice

Places are still available on the next College research skills training workshop. Evidenced Based Practice: How to find the evidence and make sense of it is offered free of charge to College Members through the iPRO scheme. The skills workshop will be held on Sunday 2 November, from 1pm – 5pm at the Thistle Hotel in Edinburgh.
iPRO, the College’s research support service, organises a series of free courses and workshops across the country, specifically tailored to meet the needs of optometrists who are new to carrying out research. This workshop will enable participants to appreciate the concept of evidence based practice, to recognise where to find evidence relevant to optometric practice, to critically read research papers to differentiate between good and bad evidence and to understand the statistical conceptscommonly used in research papers. The workshop will be delivered by John Tickner, an independent optometrist and a Fellow of the College of Optometrists and the American Academy of Optometry. John has a specialist interest in medical statistics and full scope optometry practice.
Commenting on the training day Beverley Hancock, iPRO Project Manager said “we have offered this particular course at various locations throughout the UK, following Members’ feedback that an introduction on understanding and using research findings was very much needed. Previous courses have been very well received We’ve had excellent feedback from participants who have commented that the course has been invaluable in helping them to develop a much better understanding of evidenced based practice. This is the final workshop planned: there are a several places left and I would urge College Members to book as soon as possible.”
