College welcomes key strategic appointment

18 August 2008

The College of Optometrists is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Bowen to the new position of Head of Research strategy.

Michael joined the College on 11 August from the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). For the past ten years Michael has worked as a senior manager in the charity sector, in roles that have been concerned with standards, regulation, professional practice and research, particularly the role of research in the development of policy at organisational, professional and national levels. At the
UKCP Michael was involved in work to develop national frameworks for standards and the regulation of Psychotherapists as well as the development of National Occupational Standards for use within the NHS. Research played a key role in this development, in particular in seeking to influence the Department of Health and other bodies in their understanding of the profession and practice of psychotherapy, and their approach to policy in relation to mental health generally.

Commenting on his appointment Michael said “I am delighted to be joining the College at such an exciting time in its development. The new research strategy is ambitious and comprehensive and I am looking forward to working with stakeholders from across the profession to drive this strategy forward.”

Bryony Pawinska, Chief Executive of the College of Optometrists, said “This is a key strategic post, introduced to ensure that the Research Committee’s new strategy is implemented and built upon to position the College at the centre of vision science research focused on patient benefit. Over the last two years the College has worked hard to develop a wide-ranging research strategy, building on the success of our longstanding postgraduate scholarship and bursary schemes. One of the key elements of this strategy, iPRO, focusing on offering practical support, training and advice to community and hospital based optometrists was successfully rolled out last year, and continues to move from strength to strength. Our recent research strategy day gave us the opportunity to consult widely with key stakeholders on the consensus of opinion regarding current issues in the sector and the evidence base which will be required. I look forward to working with Michael as he uses this information to advance the College’s strategy. Michael’s breadth of experience and knowledge is a valuable asset for the College.
