On the record - New DOCET DVD explores the optometrist-patient relationship
27 March 2009
DOCET has joined forces with the Association of Optometrists to produce a “legal scenario” on DVD. On the Record is the latest distance learning project from DOCET and illustrates a series of events leading to a GOC Fitness to Practise hearing for a community optometrist.
The DVD illustrates a number of scenarios where communication between the optometrist, their patient and the patient’s family lead to a series of misunderstandings which culminate in the development of a serious eye condition and a subsequent complaint to the GOC.
The script was written by the AOP’s legal team and first presented at the National Optometric Conference. The subject matter was felt to be so relevant to practising community optometrists that DOCET agreed to dramatise it for DVD and make it available to as wide an audience of optometrists as possible.
Commenting on the DVD, Dr Rob Hogan, Chair of DOCET said:
“On the Record provides a comprehensive and timely look at record keeping – I would urge every optometrist to take the time to watch. This latest DVD from DOCET is an innovative piece of work and will be an invaluable resource for optometrists. The DVD focuses on the essential skills we need in everyday situations and will help optometrists improve their skills in both record keeping and communication in the consulting room.”
Each DVD is accompanied by an updated copy of DOCET’s Record Keeping booklet, first published in 1999. The disc also includes a professional commentary in the "extras" section, analysing the evidence and highlighting key points from the drama.
Viewers can log onto www.docet.info to post comments online and to vote on whether, in their opinion, the fitness to practise of the optometrist was impaired or not.
The DVD has been shortlisted for four International Visual Communications Association (IVCA) awards. The IVCA awards celebrate the best in corporate and public sector communication. The DVD will be distributed to optometrists shortly.
